Brigadeiro Bakery

“Brigadeiro” is probably one of the most traditional Brazilian sweets! We have them mainly during birthday parties, but it is so popular that basically any occasion is appropriate for eating them!

Loosely translated to “brigadier” (as in the military rank), there are a lot of theories about the origin of this sweet. The most common one is that in the Brazilian elections of 1945, candidate Eduardo Gomes, who was a brigadier himself, had a slogan “Vote for the brigadier, as he is handsome and single” (it rhymes in Portuguese) and the women who worked on his campaign started distributing this sweet in exchange for donations

As a lover of this sweet, I always look for places to buy them! Even though they are fairly easy to make, I prefer not to learn, otherwise I would eat them everyday! So I found a bakery in New York that sells them, in different flavors (the traditional one is chocolate), as well as other Brazilian sweets!

As you can see in the picture, I tasted different flavors. My favorite is still the traditional, only with chocolate, but the others were also very tasty! I really enjoyed the “Two Lovers”, second one in the third row, half white chocolate, half milk chocolate.  The “White Crunch”, second one in the first row, is also really good, with white chocolate.

The place is owned by Brazilians and it’s in Soho! Definitely worth the visit!
