Café Patoro (Brazilian Coffee Shop)

One of the things I miss most about Brazil is the food, so I’m always looking for places in NY that sells any kind of Brazilian food. To my great luck, there’s a place in Financial District, where I live, that sells Brazilian famous “pao de queijo”, which could be translated as “cheese bread”.

The name Patoro came from an idea of the Korean/Brazilian owner, Ah La Ko, that a pao de queijo looks like a golden egg, so it must have been laid by a golden duck. Following this train of thought, she created a word that sounds like “golden duck” in Portuguese (“sounds like” because the actual words would be “pato de ouro”).

They had been looking for a permanent place for a while now, and they finally opened this café nearly two months ago. The staff is very friendly, the atmosphere is great and the food is just everything a Brazilian could ask for (or anyone who enjoys good food!).

It is a café, so there aren’t meals. Rather, they have the simple original pao de queijo I, but they also created other types, with different flavors. They also have sweets very famous in Brazil, like the “brigadeiros”. It’s a great place to visit if you live in NY or just want to try some Brazilian traditional food!
