I should be honest and warn you that I’m very biased when talking about this movie because I’ve always enjoyed the franchise. Yes, Tom Cruise is older but the fun I have watching it remains the same.

After a series of questionable missions, CIA chief Hunley (Alec Baldwin) convinces the Senate to shut down IMF (Impossible Mission Force). However, this doesn’t stop Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise), since he is determined to find and destroy an organization known as the Syndicate, an international rogue nation that has been causing a number of “accidents” around the world and killing innocent people. Ethan gets help from William Brandt (Jeremy Renner), Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) and Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames). We are introduced to Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), whose intentions are not clear to Ethan (nor to us, for that matter).

I enjoyed the twists in the plot, the action sequences and the soundtrack! It’s always nice to hear that famous tune in a movie theater. Speaking about the action sequences, there has been a lot of promotion regarding the first scene of the movie (which is the photo on the poster) because Tom Cruise was actually hanging from a plane (no CGI nor stunts were used). And the final result is fun to watch!

I’ve also always been a fan of the masks they use in the franchise! Every time something unusual happens I keep thinking that someone is wearing one of those masks, but I’m usually wrong about whom.

Another personal note: as I was leaving the theater, I overheard two women in the escalator discussing the movie and they didn’t understand anything! They were asking each other what “IMF” meant (and it’s explained a lot in the film, especially in the beginning). One of them was wondering if it meant “International Monetary Fund”! That doesn’t make sense in the context of the movie! Oh, and please don’t leave the theater saying “that action sequence is impossible to happen in real life”. Yes, we know. Read the title of the movie, accept the premise that it really is impossible and have fun!

Finally, as a James Bond fan, I can’t write this review without mentioning the great number of references to the James Bond franchise. Coincidence or not, they were there! They even used the term “shadow organization”, which is something said in Quantum of Solace and will be the theme for the upcoming Spectre (which means both “ghost” and Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion). There is even an opera scene this Mission: Impossible extremely similar to the one in Quantum of Solace! But these similarities are not a bad thing, at least in my opinion!

Therefore, it’s a fun way to spend two hours, especially if you like action movies!
