“Monogamy isn’t realistic” is what Amy (Amy Schumer) heard from her father (Colin Quinn) when she was little. And is also one of the first things we hear both in the trailer and in the movie, so we think that Trainwreck is going to focus mainly on Amy’s inability to be faithful to just one man. However, that’s what happens just during the first act of the film.

Sooner than expected, Amy falls in love with Aaron (Bill Hader), and what I thought would be only one of those comedies with dirty jokes turns into a romantic comedy and even a little bit of drama (one of the parallel stories, not shown in the trailer, is more serious than expected). As I walked out of the movie theater, I overheard some people behind me on the escalator saying “it was not what I expected” or “it’s not as funny as I thought”.

Yes, Amy does go out with a lot of guys when the movie starts and she also drinks a lot and uses a lot of drugs. She sounds drunk even when she is sober, but I guess that’s just the way Amy Schumer talks. However, she is not a total mess, since she manages to keep her job and cares about her father. She reminds me a little bit of Samantha Jones, from Sex and the City, but Samantha didn’t have a drinking problem.

Since it’s directed by Judd Apatow (The 40 year-old Virgin, Knocked Up, etc.) and it’s Amy Schumer’s first time writing a screenplay, it’s understandable that a lot of expectations would surround the movie. And the result is a funny movie, just different than advertised.

To be honest, most of the funny parts are already in the trailer. The funniest character, for me, was basketball player LeBron James, who is playing himself and is Aaron’s friend. He is always thinking about romance (and loves to watch Downton Abbey) and is always concerned about money, which is completely the opposite of what you would expect from him. I’ve already read that people liked him so much in the movie that he is being considered to be a part of Space Jam 2 (if it does happen; just a reminder: Michael Jordan was in the first one).

One final note: I could not recognize Tilda Swinton as Amy’s boss! I knew she looked familiar, but only when I saw the credits did I realize it was her! The makeup department should be congratulated for that!
