Yes, I’m writing a review about a musical that talks about people who writes reviews! Currently playing at New York Musical Theater Festival (which ends on Monday, July 27), What Do Critics Know? was a great surprise and very entertaining.
Nathan Wood (Chris Gleim) is a writer who receives terrible reviews on his show “Breakthrough”, especially written by Irma (Mary Mossberg), Chester (Ryan Knowles, the best of the cast, in my opinion) and Brad (Prescott Seymour). After his show closes, he tells his boss Tony (Danny Bolero) that he wishes those critics would write a play someday, so they can see how difficult it is. Tony, who has a lot of money coming from a dubious job, forces the 3 critics to create a show to be opened that season and to receive critical acclaim.
As expected, we find out that musicals are extremely hard to be written and that it takes talent to work on this field. The musical also makes a point that good criticism can be well received, whereas pure attacks to the writer, cast and crew is just bad journalism and mean spirit.
It was a great comedy and the critics were my favorite characters. The scene where each of them gives an idea about what type of music should feature in their show is just hilarious.
If you’re in New York until Monday, July 27, you should check it out. Or any other musical being presented at the festival! Tickets are less than US$ 30.00 and it’s a fun experience to get to see musicals still being developed.
