I’m a huge fan of Tina Fey’s and I almost always enjoy her comedies (I have to confess that I didn’t like Sisters that much…), but I was really curious to see how she would deal with a more dramatic role. And I was very glad with the result!
Based on a true story, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot tells the story of journalist Kim Baker (Tina Fey) while she was a correspondent in Afghanistan between 2003 and 2006. We meet other journalists and learn about the conditions of work of those war correspondents, as well as the war itself: after the beginning of the war in Iraq, Afghanistan was a bit forgotten by the public and, therefore, by the press.
It is a drama but there are many funny moments! Tina Fey has a great comic timing and her fellow cast members are all great, especially Alfred Molina as Attorney-General Ali Massoud Sadiq, Martin Freeman as her love interest and journalist Iain MacKelpie, Margot Robbie as her friend/rival Tanya Vanderpoel, and Billy Bob Thornton as General Hollanek, among others. It really is a wonderful cast and they all work very well together. They bring a lightness to a heavy subject – let’s not forget it is a movie about a real war.
The script is very clever and the pacing of the movie is also appropriate. Also, I absolutely loved the title! “Whiskey”, “Tango” and “Foxtrot” and the words used by the military for the letters “W”, “T, and “F”, which would make the title “WTF”!
Finally, I was able to see the cast arriving at the premiere in NY, so I’ll leave you with some pictures!
