Do you know those movies that are so bad that end up being good? This is what happens with Zoolander 2. The opening scene already gives us a hint of what to expect: Justin Bieber is brutally killed in fron of Sting’s house in Rome and, before he dies, he posts on Instagram a picture doing Zoolander’s famous look.
Fifteen years after the first movie, Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) is hiding from the world and gave up his successful career as a male model ever since his wife died when “The Derek Zoolander Center For Kids Who Can’t Read Good And Wanna Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too” collapsed. The accident also made Hansel (Owen Wilson) retire and go into reclusion due to a scar in his face. Both of them, however, are called back into action and they are motivated to do so because Derek wants to fight for the custody of his son.
The plot is completely insane: someone is killing all the famous and beautiful people on the planet, which makes Interpol’s agent Valentina (Penélope Cruz) decide to go after Zoolander for help. However, the plot is the least interesting thing in the film. It’s really just an excuse to gather an enormous amount of celebrities to do cameos, from Kiefer Sutherland, to Susan Sarandon and Neil deGrasse Tyson. The best one has to be Benedict Cumberbatch as the model “All” (it’s still unclear whether All is male or female).
Also one of the greatest things of the movie has to be the interaction between Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson. They’re absolutely wonderful and funny together, specially when Zoolander doesn’t understand what’s going on. I can’t forget to mention Will Ferell and Kristen Wiig (almost unrecognizable).
To sum up: the story is crazy, the characters and the situations and absurd, but you can’t help but laugh at all the craziness on screen. Having said that, I can’t really give a high rate to this one because it’s not truly a good movie. It’s a movie worth watching if you manage to get tickets for free, which happened to me! I probably wouldn’t pay to see it…
